Polished and pure, this modern wine expertly combines the fruit of Shiraz with the spice of Syrah. Sweet blackberries and oak with a herbal edge, meat, pepper, perfume and violets are all underpinned by spice and integrated tannins. For such a big wine, it displays genuine elegance and subtlety.

  • How to tell your Sauvignon Blanc from your Sauvignon Blanc... A Quick Guide

    By Angela Mount

Wine drinkers are as fickle as followers of fashion, and restaurant goers… or so it would appear.  There are fashion trends in wine, just as there are in food, clothes, and TV shows.  Only a few years ago, a host of unfortunate Chardonnay producers faced the public backlash of ‘anything but Chardonnay’, as wine drinkers in their droves turned away from the grape variety that had helped make Australian wine famous ( even though many still drank Chablis!).

Now Chardonnay is making a comeback, although it never really went away, and we hear rumblings that white wine drinkers are starting to tire of the bright, zesty, intense flavours of Sauvignon Blanc. My view is that’s because they’re trying the same old styles time and again, and by ringing the changes ( and countries), there’s a wealth of different types and something for every taste from this fabulous grape.

  • Wine Meets Spice

    By Angela Mount

Does wine go with Indian food? And if it does, which wine does go with Indian food?  Questions I’m asked time after time, and the reason that lager is normally the default choice when you’re in an Indian restaurant.

Roll up, award-winning New Zealand winery Yealands, who took up the challenge to host a wine dinner at Bath’s top Indian restaurant, the Mint Room, last week, to dispel the myths and prove that fabulously spiced Indian food is enhanced even more with the right wine.

Hosted by Yealands’ brand ambassador Giles James, it was a sell out evening showcasing the very best of  their exciting range of wines, with a truly spectacular feast, prepared by the Mint Room’s Executive Chef Mamrej Khan.

  • It's World Cup time, Champagne Football

Champagne Taittinger, Brut Réserve, FIFA Collector 2014 NV

The World Cup starts tonight in Brazil, so we’ve decided to move the shop to the Copacabana – see pic below (If only!). We’re lucky enough to stock Taittinger who are the Official FIFA partner, which was a great excuse to try the range again, and offer up to 20% off the Taittinger Champagnes. There's a free tasting in the shop this Saturday and even a kick up competition with a chance to win the office World Cup ball.

Therefore, my wine of the week has to be the limited addition Brut NV. Elegant, peach, blossom and vanilla, this will great cracked open in the sun, when England wine the world cup, or laid on its side for a year or two. This is one of the great NV Champagnes.

  • 91pts for an American Beauty

    J. Lohr 'Wildflower' Valdiguie 2013
    California

Refreshing red berries and soft tannins, can be drunk lightly chilled. This is a great find and a must try.

“Far from a household name, Valdiguie is well worth trying. Made like a Beaujolais, this has plenty of fresh red berry notes, with a bright acidity and soft tannins. It’s a vibrant, juicy, very welcoming glass of wine!” 91/100
