  • Tom's Tasting Suggestions - Glaetzer Special

Our recent cellar clear-out has brought to light some older vintages from Glaetzer. There are eight vintages and three wines here – but all are sourced from the same ancient-vine fruit (up to 120 year-old Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon) from the Ebenezer district in the north of the Barossa Valley. The Shiraz was originally bottled under the name Glaetzer Shiraz,  but when Ben Glaetzer took over from his father in the early 2000s, he phased-in Amon-Ra, a pure Shiraz from the very oldest vines, followed a couple of years later by Godolphin, a blend of old vine Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Godolphin was re-named Anaperenna in 2006.

    Happy tasting!

  • Tom's Tasting Suggestions

I’ve dug out of the cellar six vintages of one of my favourite Bordeaux estates – Château Picque Caillou – which presents a probably never-to-be-repeated opportunity for a vertical tasting.  For less than £5, you can compare three absolutely classic vintages, and see how the winemaker addressed the more challenging years in between. Picque Caillou is one of only four wine-producing châteaux still located within Bordeaux city proper, and is just 500m away from the historic and world-famous First Growth, Château Haut-Brion; much beloved by Thomas Jefferson.

Also on taste is the closest thing we have right now to a fine white Bordeaux, the outstanding Morgenster Estate white.  At one quarter of the price of Domaine de Chevalier, it’s fabulous value for money.  Finally, we have a First Growth from Sauternes – Château Rayne Vigneau.  Following a period in the doldrums, this estate (whose vineyards reputedly yield not just grapes but also precious stones) has now rediscovered its mojo, with a stonking trio of recent vintages.

    Don’t miss this one!

    Red:

2010 Barbaresco DOCG, Coste Rubin, Fontanafredda

Barbaresco is a wine which demands attention and respect: for its prestigious history, which is the result of hard work, but above all on account of the splendid sensations it offers in the glass. Decanter magazine’s recent article on the rise of Barbaresco means that it should no longer play second fiddle to Piedmont’s more famous Barolo.

    £25.08                   per 75cl bottle

    £0.80                     per 25ml sample

2009 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione

Classic Brunello which scored highly in a Decanter magazine tasting last year. The team awarded the wine 93 points, remarking on its ‘ripe and concentrated blue and berry fruit aromas with notes of spice, cocoa and leather.’

    £26.40                   per 75cl bottle

    £0.90                     per 25ml sample

2008 Amarone Classico Corte Bra, Sartori

For more than 100 years the Sartori family has been a leading producer in Valpolicella. This ruby red Amarone has the characteristic rich, ripe fruit aromas of the style, with notes of blackcurrant, raspberry, and dried herbs. It is full bodied with refreshing, bright acidity, and a long, lingering finish.

    £28.16                   per 75cl bottle

    £0.90                     per 25ml sample

2010 Vino Nobile DOCG, Vigna Asinone, Poliziano

This Sangiovese is made by one of the area’s top producers, treated to 18 months in barriques and left to rest in the bottle for a further 8 months. The nose is full of spice, dark cherry and brilliantly judged new oak. A Tuscan beauty that is drinking now but will gain further complexity from further ageing over the next few years.

    £34.76                   per 75cl bottle

    £1.20                     per 25ml sample

2010 Barolo DOCG, Sori Ginestra, Conterno Fantino

This Barolo is a regular winner of Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri (3 glasses) award – the Michelin stars of wine. The grapes are grown on the famous cru of the same name in Monteforte, an historic vineyard that is considered one of the finest for growing the Nebbiolo grape.  Classic aromas of tar and roses greet the nose, with very fine tannins on the silky palate.

    2013 Cometa Planeta

This varietal Fiano is one not to miss – it is, without a doubt, one of the finest examples of this variety to be found anywhere on the planet. In January Olly Smith featured the wine in his column for the Mail Online, writing that was "thrillingly poised between peach and pineapple and great with seafood."

    £20.68                   per 75cl bottle

    £0.70                     per 25ml sample

2012 Vintage Tunina IGT, Vinnaioli Jermann

Jermann are situated close to the Slovenian border in Friuli, north east Italy, their wines continuing to push the country’s vinous boundaries. Decanter magazine’s Ian D’Agata chose the wine as one of his ‘white icons of our times’ in his recent Italian supplement.  It’s an intriguing blend of late harvested local grapes, as well as better known Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

    £1.20                     per 25ml sample

    Sweet:

    2011 I Capitelli IGT, Anselmi

From one of the rebels of Soave country, Robert Anselmi, who selects his grapes from the vineyards that are identifiable by the adjacent 'capitelli' (chapels) which, from experience, are the best geographic positions to produce grapes. This unctuous wine spends 16 months in barriques and between 1 and 3 years in the bottle to mellow the flavours of apricots, honeycomb, tobacco, and spicy orange.

2010 Reserva, Pago de los Capellanes

    £33.44          per 75cl bottle

    £1.10            per 25ml sample

2009 Villa Oliveira Touriga Nacional, Casa da Passarella

Mark Squires of Robert Parker fame wrote of this fresh, complex red: “this graceful wine says Dão in so many ways, from the refined mid-palate to the crisp, bright finish and the subtlety. It is a Burgundy lover’s Touriga...” A Valentine’s treat, perhaps?

    £34.32          per 75cl bottle

    £1.20            per 25ml sample

    1996 Artadi Pagos Viejos, Rioja

Rated 96 points by Robert Parker, this extremely rare Rioja is now almost two decades old. Full of smoky notes of sundried tomato, dark chocolate, blackcurrant and cloves, this is a wine that will not hang around for long – get it while you can...

    Madeira:

A great opportunity to try three of the noble grape varieties of Madeira, side by side.

Madeira Sercial 10 Year Old, Henriques & Henriques

The driest style of Madeira, fermented later than sweeter styles like Malvasia or Verdelho. Complex and almondy, with hints of dried fruits and a fresh mouthwatering acidity.

    £16.68          per 75cl bottle

    £0.60            per 25ml sample

Madeira Verdelho 10 Years Old, Henriques & Henriques

Made in a medium dry style with a deeper amber colour than Sercial, and a little more sweetness. Layers of dried fruits and nuts are complemented by a touch of caramel.

    £16.68          per 75cl bottle

    £0.60            per 25ml sample

Madeira Malvasia 10 Years Old, Henriques & Henriques

    £16.68          per 75cl bottle
