Product details

  • Variety

  • Distinct - and surprising - Pinot character on the nose. It could almost be from the Cote de Beaune. Blueberries, cream, a touch of pine needles and the lovely creamy cocoa character that surfaces in several of the Mazzei family's wines from the Fonterutoli estate. Supremely elegant in the mouth, and beautifully pure in style, its distinctive Italian-ness manifests itself here. With crisp acidity and gentle texture, it has no shortage of luscious fruit or complex flavours to deliver enjoyment with each successive sip. Raspberries and dried cherries with a touch of chocolate. Yum!

Great Western Wine...also has an attractive mini-supertuscan called Poggio alla Badiola, from Chianti producer Castello di Fonterutoli – an appealingly smooth blend that tempers the refreshing acidity of sangiovese with soft, plummy merlot. It has the 2011 (13.5% abv) at £11.75 (10% off if you buy a dozen).

Fiona BeckettThe Guardian, June 2013

The vineyard is located at Badiola with an altitude of 450 m. a.s.l. The exposure is to the west and southwest. There are between 3,000 and 6,000 vines to the hectare, and the grapes are hand picked at the beginning of October. The fermentation temperature is around 32° C, with a maceration period of 15 days. Maturation is in stainless steel tanks and then small barrels of American oak for six months.
