Yves Cuilleron is a great winemaker, especially renowned for his fine St Jospehs. 2009 was a good northern rhone vintage and this superb Syrah comes from selected vineyards and bursts with gorgeous, inky, oaky yet velvety, bramble and violet-perfumed fruit. Great with light game birds, including guinea fowl and partridge, for an alternative festive centrepiece.

Winemaking
In recent years as part of the revival of interest in Rhone Valley wines, a group of mostly young growers, all working with consultant oenologist Jean Luc Colombo, has coalesced, called Rhone Vignobles. Colombo has generated interest - and some controversy - with his ultra modern ideas, yet each grower most definitely makes his own wines. Yves Cuilleron is one such grower, producing this Cote Rotie which is an elegant, spicy Syrah with concentration and firm structure. Since taking over from his uncle, Yves Cuilleron has transformed the estate into one of the appellation's finest. He managed to increase the estate from 4ha to 17ha.
