Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about – limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. It is the pinnacle of Colin’s 30-year career with achievement such as his creation of the revered Barossa Valley Estates E & E Black Pepper Shiraz. Colin and his winemaker son Ben have created a small, focused portfolio – limited quantities of classic Barossa reds which are an expression of traditional Barossa viticulture and viniculture. Exceptional fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines. With minimal intervention, Colin and Ben make the unique, elegant wines which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossa Valley.

Fruit comes from the famed Ebenezer vineyards in the north west of the Barossa Valley. The old vines of Ebenezer are an important part of Australia’s winemaking heritage and a living link to traditional Barossa viticulture. The exceptional fruit used in the flagship Glaetzer Shiraz and the Bishop Shiraz is sourced from non-grafted, low yielding vines up to 80 years of age. The oldest vines, from 1922, bear only half to one tonne per acre. Younger vines produce 2.5 to 3 tonnes per acre.

In the difficult 03 vintage much of the fruit was used for Wallace, making it extraordinary value. Most of the vineyards are non-irrigated but some of the newer vines (propagated from original plantings) have supplementary drip irrigation to combat stress in drought years.

Amon-Ra is the most recent Glaetzer release and it confirms the family as one of the world’s best Shiraz producers, with a Wine Advocate score of 96/100 - a huge accolade for an extraordinary wine.

The Australian Langtons Fine Wine Guide wrote “Glaetzer Shiraz epitomises the strong sense of place emerging in the Barossa.. Glaetzer is one of the emerging stars of the Barossa, .philosophically and by heritage.”
