  • The Glen Carlou Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon named after the distinctive gravel soils in which the vines are planted and the old quarry site where the winery stands today. Superbly balanced with a rich bouquet of blackberry, mulberry and spicy oak supported by firm, supple tannins. Dark, almost black plum skin purple, with lovely hints of cinnamon and anise, as well as moist tobacco and dark chocolate. The palate has a rich concentration of cured blackberries infused with ripe tannins and mocha. A rich rounded mouthfeel that is warm and lingering.

The flagship 2007 Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon has a lifted, herbaceous, tertiary bouquet with tobacco, cedar and graphite that lends it an Old World personality. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy dark berries, bilberry, blueberry and a touch of salt towards the finish that has good length and definition. It handles the 24 months in new oak with aplomb, retaining freshness and vitality. Drink now-2019. 92 points

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place over 14 days in stainless steel tanks, followed by 10 days on the skins. Barrel ageing: 18 months in 100% New French Oak, Nevers MHT. Year to year, the grapes from this block keep making Glen Carlou's most stunning Cabernet. A wine that ages extremely well and is to be enjoyed with good friends and a great meal. The wine will benefit with up to 15 years of ageing.
