  • The Printer’s Ink Pinotage is a tribute to the Meinert family’s heritage as master printers in Namibia. Ex-journalist Martin Meinert makes a very small and personalised range of wines in limited quantities at the hillside Devon Crest vineyard outside Stellenbosch. Each wine is created with much thought and care to ensure uniqueness and individual character. Full-bodied and elegant yet it has richness on the mid-palate. The emphasis is put on fruit flavours through gentle extraction methods, thereby also avoiding hard tannins. Enjoy with roast meats or casseroles.

Press ReviewPress

Last week I caught up with one of my favourite South African winemakers, Martin Meinert, who makes small parcels of delectable, hand-crafted wines on his beautiful Devon Valley Estate, near Stellenbosch. I was entranced by the latest vintage of his Pinotage. Pinotage is a ‘marmite’ wine – you either love it or hate it; this one’s a bit different and I’d urge Pinotage haters to give it a go – it shows the softer, silky, opulent style that Pinotage can deliver if produced with love and care – try it – it smells of violets and crushed raspberries, and has a delicious, very ripe, red berry, and blackberry flavor – full –bodied yet soft – the perfect red for barbecues or weekend roast beef.

The vineyard is untrellised, leading to a low yield of 5tons/ha and early ripening. It was planted in 1997 and is on a high cool slope in Devon Valley, on deep rich Hutton soils. The vines received no supplementary irrigation. Cold maceration of 10 days at under 10ºC followed by a short hot fermentation (3 days) before pressing. Thereafter the wine is taken to barrel immediately where it finishes MLF. Bottled after about 20 months in 225L 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels.

Food recommendation

Pairs well with gamey flavours, also works well with chocolate souffle.
