Strong colour; delivers a massive bang for its buck, with an array of red and black fruits on bouquet and palate alike. Screwcap. Rating 89. Drink to 2015.

James HallidayAustralian Wine Companion 2011

Ruby-red. Spicy red- and blackcurrant aromas are complemented by baking spices, minerals and dried herbs. Tangy and fresh, offering spicy red berry and bitter cherry flavors and building sweetness. Finishes with good lift and snap and a lingering liquorice quality. Offers a lot of complexity and freshness for the money.

The second label red blend from Langhorne Creek's Heartland is fabulous in the tricky 2008 vintage. The Stickleback Red is a blend of (predominantly) Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon and the two northern Italian varities, Dolcetto & Lagrein. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer has crafted a deep, dense, inky black, seamless blend that has velvety texture, power, richness and concentrated and neatly integrated tannins.

Winemaking

2008 Vintage Notes: Unlike many regions in Australia, Langhorne Creek escaped most of the heat of this warm vintage. This is in part due to the cooling effect of breezes from the Southern Ocean, which blow through the vineyards every afternoon. The breeze comes off Lake Alexandrina (next to the vineyards) and is known as the "Lake Doctor" by locals. Yields were low to medium, with thick skins showing greater colour density. Fruit showed all round concentration and complexity of flavour. Varieties: Shiraz 61%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Dolcetto 14%, Lagrein 5%. Region: South Australia (Langhorne Creek 92%, Limestone Coast 8%). Each batch was fermented on skins for 5 days before pressing. It underwent malolactic fermentation in 2 and 3-year old oak barrels. All ferments were kept cool to enhance the aromatics and to keep the tannins soft and un-obtrusive. Age of vines: 12-15 years. Vineyard yields: 7.6 tonnes/ha (3.2 tons/acre). Maturation vessel: 100% oak. Oak type: French & American. Time in barrel: 12 months.
