The 2001 Gran Reserva is a glass-coating opaque purple color. It presents an aromatic array of incense, Asian spices, cigar box, violets, and an assortment of black fruits. Dense, sweet, and powerful, this loaded effort from a great vintage will continue to evolve for another 8-10 years and deliver prime drinking through 2036. Score: 93 / 100

Winemaking
1858 saw the birth of a dream. Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal began to take its first steps. Throughout its history, the bodega has always been a pioneering, innovative company that the winegrowing sector has looked to for a lead. In 2008, Marqués de Riscal celebrated its 150th anniversary by remaining faithful to its spirit of innovation and producing a special wine to commemorate such an important milestone: Marqués de Riscal 150 Aniversario (Gran Reserva 2001). In order to make this commemorative wine the bodega’s technical team carefully selected the best grapes of the 2001 harvest, ranked as the best vintage since the legendary harvest of 1964. A Gran Reserva, Riscal used grapes from vines over 30 years’ old, sourced from estate vineyards and the harvests bought in from growers in the Rioja Alavesa district with whom we have longstanding relations, which in some cases go back several generations. After the grapes have been through the sorting tables so as to remove any grapes which are not totally healthy and ripe, alcoholic fermentation takes place, at a controlled temperature of no more than 26ºC with the total time in the vat amounting to 14 days. Once the blend has been determined for this special type of wine, it was put into oak casks and aged for 32 months, followed by a further 3 years’ rounding off in the bottle, thereby completing the process of maturation and polishing of the tannins so as to obtain a rounded, balanced wine which is at the same time powerful and easy for the consumer to drink.
