Chateau Cantemerle
Medoc
Château Cantemerle's woodland setting is amongst the most beautiful of any château in the Médoc. It is located in the far south of the Médoc, almost on the outskirts of Bordeaux City and is the first major property on the Médoc Route des Châteaux, north of Bordeaux. Cantemerle has 67 hectares of vineyards, planted with Merlot (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (23%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The wines usually ferment for 5 days in wooden vats, followed by 30 days maceration before 12 months' wood ageing, 30% new.
Cantemerle is classified as a 5ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Medoc Classification, and offers a combination of good quality and good value. Some are even of the opinion that it should be upgraded as the legendary Bordeaux classification was based only on the selling price of the wines at the time.
Cantemerle goes through a process called 'selective devatting'; where only the middle section of the vatted grape juice is pressed - this is unique to Chateau Cantermerle, resulting in a purer wine, completed separated from unwanted grape matter. In style this is known as a vibrant claret; showing plenty of spice and black fruit characteristics, with supple tannins and a soft texture. Cantemerle is a Grand Cru Bordeaux at an affordable price, making it a big seller every year.
