J Lohr Estates
California
Jerry Lohr grew up on a farm in North Dakota. On graduating, he started a property development business and in 1972 returned to his farming roots by planting 280 acres of vineyard in Monterey County. He started his winery in 1974, and over the years the J.Lohr label has become a byword for consistency and quality. When Jerry discovered that Cabernet did not produce the desired results in Monterey, he bought and planted some land in Paso Robles. Today he has 436 acres of vineyard in the cool Monterey County and 476 acres in Paso Robles.
In 2010 J Lohr were voted American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine. They said of J Lohr: "The company is the 16th biggest winery in California, but what makes it distinctive is not only its ubiquitous presence on restaurant wine lists and store shelves, or the trust the consumer has come to place in the brand name, but, less known, the extent to which J. Lohr— both the company and the man whose name it bears—has been responsible for the historical development of two of California’s most important wine regions: Monterey County and Paso Robles."
