In the words of the Gault-Millau wine guide, Laumersheim-based Weingut Knipser is a gesamtkunstwerk. Like so many German compound nouns, it’s not the easiest concept to translate into English, but ‘all-encompassing art form’ is just about right.

Taste Knipser Riesling – all focused fruit and fine-boned minerality – and the balanced warmth of Knipser
Spätburgunder, and you’ll understand why. These are wines that perfectly express the Pfalz region they call home, where a hint of Mediterranean warmth creates new dimensions of ripeness and opulence.

The Knipsers, originally from the Italian Südtirol, have been farming this area since 1876, with Heinz Knipser taking his place as one of the region’s first winemakers in 1948, selling his produce direct to knowledgeable locals and restaurants.

Now under the guidance of brothers Werner and Volker Knipser – recently joined by Werner’s children, Stephan and Sabine – Weingut Knipser now farms some 40 hectares of vines in some of the finest spots of Laumersheim, Grosskarlbach and Dirmstein. And its devotion to quality was recognised in 1993, when Knipser was granted membership of the VDP German quality wine association.
