New Zealand

Urlar, the Gaelic word for earth, was established by Angus and Davina Thomson in 2004 who emigrated from their farm in the Scottish Highlands. They planted Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris Riesling and Pinot Noir and winemaker Guy McMaster joined them in 2007. Economic and environmental sustainability are their driving principals. These practices are about giving life back to the soil and managing the vineyard as a balanced sustainable farming unit. This includes organic practices such as recycling through composts and liquid manures and increasing plant bio diversity through inter-row crops. Their own Highland cow herd provide the manure to drive our composting process. Using the biodynamic farming and gardening calendar, the rhythmic influences of the sun, moon, planets and stars are recognised and worked where possible. This commitment has been recognised and rewarded recently when we won the Hills Harvest and Gallagher Innovation Awards. The result is beautiful, clean, hand crafted wines that have not impacted negatively on the soils as they have been created.
