  • Hugely complex, this wine has concentrated aromas and flavours, married to wonderful freshness. It is lively and juicy - like biting into a just-ripe cherry that bursts in your mouth - and yet is far from straighforward, with intriguing nuances of spices, Mediterranean herbs, olives and well-integrated oak. This is irresistible now - and even better if you decant it first - but if you can, keep some bottles back for 2...5...7...or even 10 years, as it has both the guts and the balance to gain even more complexity with time.

...This opens very elegantly. It is beautifully balanced, with a feel of sophistication and refinement--which is pretty much how most of Crasto's wines show these days. Of Crasto's submissions, though, this might well have the most character and complexity this year. As refined and approachable as it seemed to be on opening, this developed steadily and impressively, tightening along the way. This is a terrific Old Vines Reserve. Scored 94/100 (2013 VINTAGE)

Cassis and cream notes, rich and powerful with concentrated fruits and well-structured tannins. Silver Medal (2013 VINTAGE)

International Wine Challenge 2016

A section of the Crasto home vineyard has 70-year-old vines that are used to produce this wine. The resulting concentration and depth of flavor are remarkable. The wine is full of black fruits, dark plum skin and firm tannins. As a complement to this fruitiness, the wine also has the beginnings of a mature leather and spice character. It is likely to be ready to drink from 2018. Scored 94/100 (2013 VINTAGE)

Winemaking

From plots of old (70+ years), low yielding vines with up to 30 different grape varieties are kept back for ageing in French and American oak barrels for up to 18 months. A high proportion of the grapes used in the blend are foot trodden in lagares. The wine may be drunk soon after its release but has the depth and concentration to develop in bottle over the long term. It is a complex, powerful wine with great intensity and a richly textured palate. It is always bottled without any fining or filtration.

Food recommendation

Lamb or kid, seasoned with rosemary, garlic and olive oil, and grilled outside over charcoal.

Old vines magic! Review by Matt

I enjoyed this wine immensely. Its got great depth and lovely oak and fruit integration. Despite the high alcohol its impossible to put down due to the sheer hedonistic pleasure you get receive from the wine and I would say it might be difficult to find many better bottles for the price with the same originality, sense of place and value for money.
