Good definition, with a subtle smoky note coming through. The palate is medium-bodied, fine tannins, dark plum, raspberry and strawberry with a harmonious, quite elegant finish. Considering this is an entry-level Pinot, this is damn good.

From one of my favourite Otago producers, this little wine is a ripper. A perfumed and pleasant nose proceeds a bucket load of sweet and juicy fruit that play along your palate. Utterly drinkable and a great intro level wine for those who want a look in what this winery can do and at a fraction of the price of their flagship Pinot.

Winemaking

The weather in December 2008 was warm and settled and consequently the flowering and set were excellent. The warm weather continued through summer, then cooled off towards autumn and we achieved good flavour and ripeness. The wine is made in small open fermenters. Typically a pre-ferment cold soak of 5 days, punch downs during fermentation then up to 7 days extended maceration. All the lots rely on indigenous yeasts, and a few have a whole bunch component of ~15%. All the wine then goes into French oak barrels, about 20% new. Malolactic is in the spring then the lots for the Unravelled Pinot are selected, blended and given a light filtration for clarity before bottling.

  1. Simple but good Pinot Noir Review by David Summers

    Pinot Noir at a cheap price so often disappoints.

    This wine though ticks all the right boxes, summer fruits come through clearly - strawberries and the like. And then in the background a hint of the earthiness that good pinot noir often has.

    So this wine is a fine example of pinot noir - it shows clearly what the grape is capable of. On the other side though, was almost totally impossible to place where the wine came from - the style was close to a Burgundy, so if I had to guess - I'd have guessed a french wine, not a New Zealand. Still even with the lack of place - this is still a wine to buy again. (Posted on 06/08/2010)
