VON BUHL 2009 OFFER
September 2010
For only the second year we are delighted to offer the fantastic wines from prestigious Riesling producer, Reichsrat Von Buhl. These are hugely impressive dry German wines that are mineral and complex to their core have achieved international acclaim and have been a revelation to both our customers and staff.
Von Buhl was founded in 1849 by Franz Peter Buhl, a Bavarian politician and proactive spokesman for the German winemaker. The estate grew in size and quality as it passed from father to son and quickly won international acclaim, even being selected as the drink of choice to toast the opening of the Suez Canel in 1869.
Aside from an unquestionable talent for winemaking and a dedication to organic viticulture, it is the estate’s rather fortunate geological makeup that has shaped the success of its tantalising wines. Von Buhl boasts an impressive portfolio of vineyards surrounding the villages of Forst and Deidesheim packed with mineral-rich soils. Several sites are protected by heat-retaining sandstone walls offering richness and roundness, while other locations are left exposed to cool breezes giving an intensely zesty acidity to the vastly diverse wines. Each wine shares a common core of vibrant acidity, rich fruit characteristics and a smoky tangy minerality… as well as an ability to silence even the most opinionated of palates.
Wines available are listed below. To place your order, or to request further information please e-mail Tom King at kingt@greatwesternwine.co.uk or Edward Mercer at edward@greatwesternwine.co.uk.
‘Grands Crus’ - The prestigious VDP organisation classifies vineyards far more stringently than German wine law. Under the VDP classification, only wines coming from the very best vineyards and subject to exacting winemaking techniques may be classed as Grosses Gewächs, or ‘Grand Cru’.
‘Premier Cru’ - The classified site or ‘premier cru’ equivalent is the 2nd level in the VDP classification model which also has very strict quality laws. This classification applies only to a very select number of vineyard sites in recognition of their superior quality and these wines bear the name of a vineyard of origin.
Deidesheimer Mäushöhle ‘Premier Cru’ Riesling 2009 - £58 per six-bottle case, under bond
Tom King: Lots of Bramley apple, peaches and cream on the nose, with a hint of lime. Full-flavoured and textures, with a wealth of lime skin, apricot and mirabelle plum flavours. Lovely persistency of flavour. 2010-16
Reiterpfad ‘Grand Cru’ Riesling 2009 - £105 per six-bottle case, under bond
Tom King: Lemongrass, melon and mango aromas, with a hint of aniseed. Richer and softer than the 2008, less razor blade, more plush. Lots of sustain – in fact, most of the flavour is manifest on the finish. Plump and juicy with understated minerality in the middle. 2010-17
Pechstein ‘Grand Cru’ Riesling 2009 - £105 per six-bottle case, under bond
Tom King: Lots of tropical fruit aromas – pineapple, mango, suggestion of banana (fresh rather than confected). Firmer minerality than Reiterpfad, but fleshed out with layers of juicy tropical fruit. The flavours become cooler, more refined on the finish – fresh lemon and peach, mandarin orange. More approachable than the 2008, and the flavours hang off the marvellous, almost salty, minerality. This is exquisite. 2010-14; 2018-25
Ungeheuer ‘Grand Cru’ Riesling 2009 - £105 per six-bottle case, under bond
Tom King: More muted nose than either Pechstein or Reiterpfad – lime and a touch of pine. Not muted in the mouth – lemon, Chilean papaya, apricot purée. Almost creamy-textured (although not at all buttery in flavour). On the finish, the flavours morph into essence of honeydew melon, clover honey and peach. Long. 2011-2018
Kirchenstück ‘Grand Cru’ Riesling 2009 - £175 per six-bottle case, under bond
Tom King: A very pure note of perfectly sun-ripened nectarine, then hinting at both cream and mineral attributes. Classic Kirchenstück texture – somehow at once both substantial and ethereal. Intensely vibrant, somewhat salty, powerful yet lively, full of energy. Hints of spice, tropical fruit, peach, lime and honey on the finish. Amazing length of flavour. Encompasses characteristics of all the others. Outstanding. 2010-15; 2018-25+
