One of the things that makes wine so enjoyable is the inexplicable and delicate difference in flavour and style that come from small changes in soil and climate. Those differences that the French for centuries have described as ‘terroir’, and we describe simply as a sense of place. This, coupled with winemaker choices, such as when to harvest, whether to use oak, etc, results in the individuality of style which makes wines so unique. And the small amount of extra money you have to spend to drink wines that have an individuality that comes from a real sense of place, instead of big brands, makes increasing sense.
