Perrier-Jouët

Champagne

The great Champagne House of Perrier-Jouët has been creating exceptional wines for almost 2 centuries. As early as 1840 Perrier-Jouët had began to control vineyards outright, either as purchaser or by planting virgin territory and focussing within Aÿ, Mailly and particularly Avize and Cramant. Pierre-Nicolas-Marie Perrier fully realised the potential for Chardonnay in creating Champagne with elegance and refinement, the hallmarks of Perrier-Jouët today, and this influenced these early decisions. Ever vigilant to the changing tastes of its customers, Perrier-Jouët became the first producer of ’dry’ Champagne in 1854, although it wasn’t until the mid 1880’s that the term ‘Brut’ would be coined. Maintaining this innovative reputation, Perrier-Jouët were also the first Champagne House to release ‘millésimes’ or ‘vintage Champagne’ and in 1858 were also the first House to state the ‘cru’, or village name, and the year of the harvest on the cork and then on the label itself by the 1860’s.
