Press ReviewPress

South African reds go from strength to strength, and Ken Forrester, does them as well as anyone. One of the country’s leading wine producers, he has pioneered the rise of Chenin Blanc, with his top notch FMC, but is also a great enthusiast of Rhone-style reds, which he believes work particularly well in the South African climate. His The Renegade Shiraz Grenache 2012 proves the point; whilst Shiraz is a household name now, Grenache is less so, and it’s the combination of the two, which makes this wine so delicious. The richness of the deep, spicy, black fruit and dark chocolate fuelled Shiraz is balanced, by the lighter, fresher, red fruit and wild herb edginess of the Grenache. If you love Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf,, you won’t go far wrong with this one. Bold, yet elegant, with sweet richness of fruit, balanced with the evocative character of Mediterranean olives, thyme, and a hint of licorice. Perfect with spiced, chargrilled steak, rich stews, and slow roast lamb shanks.

Angela MountBath Chronicle

51% Shiraz / 49% Grenache. Duplex soils, fine sandy loam on a clay base. 8 tons per hectare, trellised vineyard. Fermented in open tanks with gentle extraction by pumping over and then pressed and racked into second and third fill French oak barrels for 12 months. This adds complexity and structure to the soft natural tannins. 5 % New American Oak.
