South America’s only Atlantic-influenced wine region, bordered by Argentina to the west and the River Plate to the south, Uruguay's maritime climate has more in common with the Atlantic vineyards of Europe from Bordeaux to Galicia than its South American neighbours.
The 300 or so small boutique-style wineries also share similarities with the small estates of France, providing hand-crafted character and individuality to each of their wines.

It was Basque settlers who in 1870 bestowed Uruguay with the foundations of its winemaking industry, the immensely popular Tannat grape, which thrives in the warmer climate producing more velvety, rounder, riper expressions than across the water in Madiran.

The future is bright for Uruguay and a change to low yields and investment in knowledge, vineyards and wineries make this the perfect time to try its unique wines.
