Tasting Note

This wine is vibrant and red-purple in color with bright aromas of boysenberry, Bing cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. The fruit complexion on the palate is equally bright, dominated by pomegranate and raspberry. Serve chilled – Steve Peck, Red Winemaker

Winemaking

Wildflower is made from 100% Valdiguié. For many years it was thought that Valdiguie was the Gamay Noir grape variety from the Beaujolais wine-growing region on France and for years it was also known as Napa Gamay or Gamay 15. However, Valdiguié actually originated in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France where it is know as Gros Auxerrois (or Brocol in Gaillac) and was first comercially propogated in 1874. A genetic study by U.C. Davis in the 1980s identified the grape variety at Valdiguie and since 1999 the term Napa Gamay has been banned from wine labels. Valdiguie produces quite dark wines that are relatively low in alcohol and many producers continue to make wines in a similar style to Beaujolais. This wine is fermented in 100% stainless steel and is not aged in oak at all which means that there is quite a pure expression of the Valdiguie fruit. The wine can be cellared for up to 5 years and can be served lightly chilled. It is a great match for salmon or roasted duck with berry sauce. Hand pick roughly 38% of the fruit and put those whole clusters directly into the fermenters, in a winemaking process called carbonic maceration – no yeast or pumping over of the fruit is done. The other technique is to gently de-stem and crush the fruit going to the fermenter, pump over and extract with fairly short, warm fermentations. Vinification: Stainless steel fermented.

Press

  • Far from a household name, Valdiguie is well worth trying. Made like a Beaujolais, this has plenty of fresh red berry notes, with a bright acidity and soft tannins. It’s a vibrant, juicy, very welcoming glass of wine. 91/100
