Tasting Note

The Chalmers Aglianico is vibrant, showing earthy cherry, aromatic spice and delicate perfume on the nose. The balanced, savoury, light-medium bodied palate shows subtle fruitcake spices, herbal notes and candied orange rind with a pleasant mouth-watering acidity and the fine, smooth, building tannins you would expect of the variety. An elegant and structured wine with excellent potential for long ageing.

Winemaking

Vineyard: East-west oriented rows trellised on a single unilateral cordon VSP system at 4500 vines/ha. East facing sloped site from 200-225 elevation. Complex rocky Cambrian terrain including dolerite, ironstone, green basalt and jasper with flecks of limestone. A warm and windy site with low disease pressure, favourable ripening conditions and moderate annual rainfall (550mm). Hand pruned to 6 x one bud spurs in winter keeping foliage compact and yields low. Very late-ripening, hand picked, usually in April.

Vinification: Viticulture East-west oriented rows trellised on a single unilateral cordon VSP system at 4500 vines/ha. Vinification Hand picked fruit is 100% destemmed and wild fermented in open fermenters. Fermentation typically goes for 20 days. The wine is then pressed and matured in 90% old and 10% new French barriques. Malolactic fermentation is natural. The wine is bottled without fining and little or no filtration after about 18 months and cellared for a further 2 years or more before release depending on the vintage.

Food Recommendation

A great match with medium weight, rich dishes like confit duck or wild mushroom and truffle pasta.

Press

  • 92/100 - The Chalmers family have the widest collection of Italian grape varieties in Australia at their Heathcote nursery and Mildura vineyard. While all are worth seeking out, this Aglianico has just hit maturity, offering beautiful drinking over the next few years. Lifted herbal and dark spice aromas lead into a silky, savoury palate of rich, leathery red berry fruit with supple, round tannins and bright, balancing acidity. Drinking window 2018-2022

  • 17+/20 - Mid ruby with orange tinges. At first like walking into a church: hints of incense and liquorice. Top notes of bright cherry, chinotto, orange skin and Campari. Grainy, fine tannins and almost a little vibrant on the finish. Compelling and special. (Fermented with indigenous yeasts and a total of three weeks on the skins. Aged for 18 months in barrel and two years in bottle. ‘Sandro [Mosele, who made this wine for Chalmers] was working at Kooyong with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and he treated this like a Pinot Noir.’)
