Tasting Note

Since 1974 the Lurtons have owned Chateau Climens, known as the Yquem of Barsac. Berenice Lurton, daughter of Lucien Lurton, took over the reigns of the estate in 1992.

An incredible mosaic of contrasting yet complementary elements, combining great concentration (mostly wonderfully perfumed) with beautifully unctuous textures and complex fruit flavours, often very honeyed; all marked by a glorious freshness and purity.

Winemaking

Vineyard: Harvesting at Climens is extremely delicate. An experienced team sorts out and gathers only the grapes affected by the famous Botrytis Cinerea, the Noble Rot.

Vinification: Wine processing is done in barrels in order to intensify each batch’s complexity and balance before proceeding to a very meticulous combination. Maturing goes on for 18 months in barrels renewed by 35 to 60% each vintage.

Press

  • 96/100 - One extremely fine lot after another, all marked by an extremely pure lemony botrytis. Bright and crisp, with lovely sweetness and mind-boggling precision. Choosing between the various barrels to make the final blend will be even tougher than usual this year. Drinking window: 2021-2055

  • 18.5/20 - Lovely super-concentrated lemon purity on the nose and cool and pure on the palate with lemon, grapefruit and pear and just a very fine grain to enhance the existing freshness. Then a touch of almonds on the finish. So elegant, long and pure. Masses of pleasure already.

  • 95/100 - A concentrated and finely nuanced wine that opens up a lot in the glass after starting out quite shy. The best thing about it is the great balance and the subtlety of flavor. It ends in a long, silky finish of serious complexity.
