Tasting Note

Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal was founded at the beginning of the 18th century, with its former owners gathering some of the best soils in the Pauillac area. The winery was included as a fifth growth in the 1855 Classification. Claire Villars Lurton took over this beautiful vineyard in 2000, modernising the winemaking facilities and introducing sustainable methods of viticulture to gain the best from the terroir.

Black berries, spices and a hint of smokiness. Beautifully fresh and fruity on the palate. Minerality and tension give it a beautiful elegance and style.

The vineyard spreads over 30 hectares and half of its area is located right next to Château Latour. The other part of the vineyard is on the plateau of Bages, South of Pauillac. The vineyard of the estate is located on 2 sets. One is made of deep gravels and the other of clay-limestone and limestone chalk. The type of soil gives the wine its power and mineral character. Much of these good lands overlook the estuary of the Gironde.

Traditional in stainless and concrete vats, whose volumes are proportional to the plots. Aged in oak barrels for16 months, 40% of which are new oak.

  • 93/100 - This wine has a true beauty and succulence that impresses, especially for the vintage. It’s full-bodied, with fine tannins and a subtle, fruity finish. It’s clarity and finesse here for 2011.

  • 90/100 - Dark ruby. Sexy aromas of dark fruits, spices and minerals complicated by a pungent floral note and subtle earth tones. Dense and suave in the mouth but at the same time light on its feet, offering fresh high notes of redcurrant and violet. Boasts outstanding clarity of flavor and inner-mouth lift thanks to lively acidity, which gives the wine an almost tart quality. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length. My original impression from the Primeurs stands: this is a very successful HBL.

  • 90/100 - Fine, lifted fragrance of Cabernet with very good clarity and persistence, depth to come. Always shows an attractive liveliness of fruit. Drinking Window: 2019 - 2030
