Tasting Note

Scored 98/100 in Decanter Italy and 96/100 by The Wine Advocate. An amazing, aged white wine - it tastes like a beautifully mature Grand Cru Burgundy...with bubbles. Elegant and well-balanced, with velvety, well-knit fruit that is redolent of vanilla, acacia honey and freshly-mown hay, combined with attractive floral notes. All of these sensations contribute to an overall flavour of great breed and remarkable persistence.

Winemaking

Ferrari is the leading producer in Italy of sparkling wine made exclusively by the 'Metodo Classico' or classical method, where the second fermentation takes place in the bottle itself. Ferrari was born over a century ago in 1902 through the efforts of Giulio Ferrari. After his studies in France, Ferrari returned to Trentino, Italy and planted Chardonnay, which no one had done before. Ferrari was convinced that through the combination of Trentino terroir, the innovative use of Chardonnay and the use of the traditional “metodo classico”, he could make world-class sparkling wines. By 1906, the awards started to roll in and Ferrari was well on its way to producing what would shortly become the most famous sparkling wine in all of Italy. In 1952, Giulio Ferrari, not having any children, chose Bruno Lunelli, a friend and local merchant as successor for his beloved business. Today the third generation of the Lunelli family is at the helm and the winery could not be in better hands as it continues to be a perennial Tre Bicchieri winner.

Press

  • The 04 Vintage:
98/100 – Lovely bright shade and infinite length in the perlage. Lightly toasty on the nose at first, then classic Trento citrus and fresh apple. Concentrated flavours on the palate, very firm structure, serious, complex and deep. Lovely return of fruit on the finish. Drink 2016-2025.

  • The 04 Vintage:
96/100 – Only made in the best years, the 2004 Trento Metodo Classico Brut Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore is an exceptional creation with enormous richness, finesse and a lingering sense of purpose. By that I mean that the wine seems firmly rooted to its Italian identity with a sharp and defined delivery that reflects the cool farming conditions of the mountainous north of Italy. The wine also offers a lingering sense of opulence and depth. I encourage readers to taste this landmark wine that is a symbol of an Italian sparkling wine tradition. This Chardonnay-based sparkler sees ten long years of careful sur lie contact. Fruit is sourced from the Maso Pianizza cru.

  • The 04 Vintage:
Not disgorged until 2015. Very tiny persistent bead. Complex lacy nose with real interest and obvious autolysis but not at all heavy. Spreads broadly across the palate. Firm, dry and very sophisticated. Lemon syllabub. Long. Really very impressive. This would hold up very well to Champagnes at the same sort of price.
