Tasting Note

The first impression is an inviting aroma of honeysuckle blossom, followed by toast and honey. When you take a sip, you immediately notice the beautifully round and generous texture with juicy melon and peach fruit character. Then come delicate, creamy oak and complex nuances of flowers and spices. All the flavours are kept fresh, precise and balanced by beautifully crisp acidity so it is rich but never heavy. Marvellous!

If you ever have the chance to taste a white Burgundy made from Pinot Beurrot (not very likely, as they're extremely rare), it will have been made from Pinot Gris. Kooyong's Pinot Gris is named after this endangered species, and is very similar in style.

This is irresistibly delicious now, but if you have superhuman self-control, it will drink well for at least another 2-3 years.

The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. The wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of geology and soils with the macroclimate of the region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within the vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice. Beurrot is comprised of two Pinot Gris parcels: the tiny original 0.24 hectare section annexing the Meres block, and the all-Pinot Gris Beurrot vineyard, which at 2.74 hectares, provides the majority of the fruit. The Beurrot vineyard is planted to a density
of 5600 vines per hectare. The fruit is whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented to as dry as possible in all-old French oak without yeast inoculation. The maturation period is ten months on yeast lees.

  • 94/100 - Stunning intensity. It's dry, spice-ridden and structural but the intensity of flavour strikes you at the outset. This is some kind of Pinot Gris. Nashi pear, apple, cloves, dry spices, nuts - there's much to experience here. This is gold medal standard, hands down.

  • 94/100 - This was once Chardonnay-like across its oak-derived vanillins and lees-inflected midriff, mealy and creamy. Now a swan, exhibiting more Gris-centric genetics and all the better for it: slippery. Viscous. Nashi pear and ripe apple gelato flavours teem across the midriff, directed by a sash of almond-soused phenolics and mineral tension. About as good as Gris gets.
