Tasting Note

Vibrant, transparent cherry red. Beautifully fresh and already complex aromas of cherry, cranberry, walnut, anise and liquorice root, with perhaps a hint of zesty blood orange. There's a wonderful woodsy earthiness going on underneath. The aromas are ripe, but the multi-faceted nuances are far more suggestive of Burgundy than the character you would expect from Australia or New Zealand. Seamlessly supple in the mouth, with superbly well-knit acidity and tannins, this is really finely-crafted and elegantly-balanced. An absolute joy to drink immediately, this could also age gracefully for at least another 7-10 years...if you can keep your hands off it.

Winemaking

100% destemmed and fermented in open vats without innoculation.
Matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new) Kooyong is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong and focuses on producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wine; which are both suited to the
Peninsula's cool maritime climate. Kooyong is a 'domain' in the true sense of the word and the wines are made from 100% estate grown fruit at its own on-site winery.

Press

  • 96/100 - It really is hard to choose a favourite from among the stellar 2016 single-vineyard pinots from Mornington Peninsula standout Kooyong - but the complex and savoury Ferrous just gets the nod in an all-star cast. The ironstone pebbles in the 20-year-old Tuerong vineyard give the wine terrific architecture with the tannins providing the framework in which quality dark cherry fruit characters and hints of spice lead the way with support from largely aged French oak barriques. The fruit here is beautifully layered with earthiness, structure and length. I'm happy to give this 96/100 and to bet most buyers find it too delicious right now to even think of cellaring it.

  • 96/100 - Always my favourite pinot of the stable for structural reasons alone: the tannins are earthy and ferric, as the name implies. Nothing gritty, though. A magical carpet to carry and obviate the sweetness of the fruit: bing cherry, blood plum and root spice. A welcome respite. Long, highly complex and flush.

  • 94/100 - True to the vintage. Less seduction and/or sweetness to the fruit; a greater sense of gravity to the tannin and overall structure. That said it’s not an underpowered wine in any way; indeed the flavours charge through the palate at a rate of knots. Dried herbs, roasted nuts, brackeny notes, ripe black cherry. A chicory aspect. Oak here, cedary and smoky, laces its way throughout. From start to finish, the quality is excellent.

  • Satisfying complexity and finish

My favourite was the "Ferrous" 2012. It had a most inviting and interesting nose, satisfying complexity and finish... I nominated [it] the Grand Cru.

  • 2012 vintage

What it lacked in length [compared with the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru] it more than made up for in balance.

  • Unique!

The Australian Kooyong (it was unique!)...had character, some exciting noses and intriguing back notes that slowly endeared themselves. Hence my purchase - must expand my horizons. I never go for Antipodean Pinot as I’m a bit of a stick in the mud (I prefer a Chorey, Savigny or Clos Vougeot).
