Tasting Note

Lovely, authentic Pinot Noir aroma, with ripe yet not overripe fruit. Beautiful succulence and softness in the mouth while remaining classic and dry. Lots of texture and sustain, with beautiful balance between the acidity, ripe tannin and fruit succulence. Delicious now, and over the next 4-5 years.

In the mountain part of the Maule Valley, Rafael Tirado and his family cultivate 18 hectares of vineyards at 600m altitude in their 80-hectare property, which were planted between 1993 and 2000. Soils are varied, including granite and volcanic ash, and yields are very low. Total production is just 25,000-30,000 bottles per year. The cooler vineyards are planted with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, on slopes at different orientations because Rafael wanted to get away from the uniformity of Chilean viticulture. He ended up planting a vineyard as a labyrinth (laberinto) and hence the name of the wines and the drawings on the labels that symbolize the vineyards. Fruit was hand-harvested and cold-macerated, then fermented in concrete vats and aged in new French oak for 12 months. The winery is entirely gravity-fed, for the ultimate in gentle handling of the wine.

  • As no 2011 or 2012 were produced, I tasted the 2013 Laberinto Pinot Noir, a wine sourced from an unusual zone in the lake Colbún in Maule, from a vineyard planted in 1998 that produced very low yields in this cool vintage. The soils are volcanic and the Pinot is planted in a narrow, higher altitude part of the valley. It was fermented in small cement vats with one third full clusters with indigenous yeasts and very light punching down or pigeage. It was matured in used French oak barrels for around one year. The nose is fresh, fruit-driven with aromas of acidic cherries and blood oranges, hints of spices, something earthy and stony aromas of wet pumice. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and fresh, elegant acidity. Elegant, juicy and fresh.

  • This is a really interesting wine, with cherry aromas leading to an earthy palate, with moss, coffee beans and more tart red fruit, along with some medium tannins. A rich, smoky, Burgundy-style red that would be a perfect match for game dishes. Good value, and best served slightly chilled in the summer.
