Tasting Note

Pago Negralada is a single vineyard Tempranillo from Abadía Retuerta’s vineyards in Sardon de Duero. The deep gravel soils here produce wines with a distinctive firm, tannic character that balances beautifully with the layers of ripe strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit. The wine spends 19 months in new French oak barrels, marrying the complex flavours of wild red fruits, liquorice, herbs and minerals.

Winemaking

After sorting, the grapes were cool-fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks for around 1 to 3 weeks; during this time, gentle extraction was performed by delestage and remontage. After a spontaneous malolactic fermentation in tank, a unique system devised by Pascal Delbeck was used to move the wine to "IFO" steel mini-vats, allowing pump-free racking without moving the barrels.

Press

  • 92/100 - A resplendent French oak, violet and and black fruit nose opens proceedings leading to a peppery and tannic palate. A young and lively example.

    • Silver Medal
  • Polished, modern and complex wine that really delivers. Fragrant nose of cherry, blackberry, fruit liquor, vanilla, cocoa, marzipan and hibiscus. Full-bodied with raspberry ripple and chocolate tones. Rich and juicy with high quality oak.

    • Platinum Award
  • 93+/100 - The warmer growing season was noticeable in the 2014 Pago Negralada, the Tempranillo from a vineyard with relatively warm soils that provides good ripeness. The grapes were picked on September 27th, quite early, and put to ferment with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation in brand new French oak barrels, where it had an upbringing of 18 months before bottling after a clarification with egg whites—quite a similar process from vineyard to vineyard and from vintage to vintage. This style of vintage worked really well for Tempranillo and the wine comes through as terribly balanced, with energy, power and elegance. While I see that Syrah has worked well in 2013, the Tempranillo needs to be ripe and years like 2013 are not as complete as 2014.

Wordless! An impressive outstanding tempranillo I enjoyed till the last drop. Massive sweet tannins, the best red wine ever tried from Spain.
