Tasting Note

Restrained and precise nose of rose petals, cantaloupe and fresh honeycomb. Beautiful purity. In the mouth, amazing freshness for white wine that's six years old, with good acidity and the same purity and precision of flavours on the palate as aromas on the nose. As well as rosepetal and melon, there are hints of pear, red apple, ripe muscat grapes and almond oil. Lingering finish.

Trimbach is based in the village of Ribeauvillé, which is in the shadow of the mediaeval castle of Ribeaupierre, after which the wine is named. The grapes are harvested at maximum ripeness from selected parcels of old Gewurztraminer vines in calcareous marl soils below the castle, from both the Osterberg and Hunawihr Grands Crus. Only the best vintages are labelled as this cuvée which is aged in large oval oak vats to add complexity before bottling.

Food Recommendation

foie gras, spicy and aromatic dishes, cheeses and fresh fruit-based desserts

  • Fragrant rose petal notes, a powerful full palate and lingering finish. A delicious, well-made wine with a fresh interpretation. (2008 vintage)

  • On the 2011 vintage ... Smoked meat and alkaline, saline intimations of maritime breeze in the nose of Trimbach’s 2011 Gewurztraminer Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre signal that we shall not be dealing in rose petals, lychee and spice in this instance but with the carnal and mineral aspects of the variety in question. Caramelized rutabaga and parsnip add earthy complexity attractively reinforced by a mere hint of sweetness – albeit from 16 grams of residual sugar – that no doubt also plays a salutary role in keeping the alcohol (as is, at 14.5%) down below conspicuous proportions. And as Jean Trimbach points out, by the time this is released the sense of sweetness will almost surely have backed-off yet a bit more. A rich broad palate impression leads into a sustained, smoky, salt-tinged finish. This ought to prove fascinating to follow – perhaps in tandem with the corresponding “Reserve” bottling, through at least 2022. 90/100
