Tasting Note

Invitingly sumptuous nose of rich, ripe fruit and savoury herbal complexity.  Wonderful sense of completeness in the mouth: velvety texture, cinnamon and spicy dried fruit flavours and a concentrated maturity reminiscent of rare, oak-aged balsamic vinegar and soy sauce.  Superbly rounded and well-balanced.

One of the most tannic varieties in the world (but don't worry, the tannin in this one is beautifully velvety), Sagrantino is a relative rarity in Italy where there are only about 250 hectares grown in the Montefalco region of Umbria. Despite this, it is a highly revered wine with DOCG status since 1992. It has been growing in Australia since 2000 with the first Australian wine made by Chalmers in 2004. There are now a number of producers making great examples of the variety which has proven to perform fantastically well in both extreme heat/drought conditions and wet vintages like 2010 and 2011.

The Chalmers family drew on the expertise of Sandro Mosele (of Kooyong fame) to make their fabulous Italian-Australian wines.

  • This Aussie Gold medal winner was ‘quite savoury on the nose with fresh cherry notes, and good structure on the palate, with dry tannins’, said team leader Sam Caporn MW, adding: ‘Feels very classically Italian.’ Fellow team leader Simon Woods thought it ‘supple and lush, plus some floral notes, with a dry finish, but lots of red fruit, too’. A partner for ‘rack of lamb with red wine jus’, concluded Hakkasan Group’s Olivier Gasselin

  • 17/20 - Almost impenetrable crimson. Wonderful, deep leafy cherry, not unlike a ripe Romagna Sangiovese. Truly concentrated, yet lively blackberry fruit on the palate with coating tannins. Firm, tannic finish but paired with lingering fruit flavours. I would love to see this age. Full of promise.
