Tasting Note

This wine displays a vibrant, deep plum colour with a dark brick-red edge. The nose is packed with berries and spice with a darker background of black olive and freshly turned earth. There is a luscious plum, blueberry, blackberry and raspberry core with secondary notes of clove and nutmeg. As the wine opens more delicate nuances are revealed, with floral notes appearing on the nose and palate. The tannins add a subtle grip and enticingly long finish.

This wine is named in honour of d'Arenberg's principal, Francis d’Arenberg Osborn, who is universally known as d’Arry. d'Arry's original blend, first launched some four decades ago, was as is it appears today - a blend of Shiraz and Grenache grown on d'Arenberg's low yielding, 19th century vineyards.

Winemaking

Small batches of grapes are crushed gently, chilled and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending.Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and used French and old American oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, and there is no racking until final blending. This wine does not undertake fining or filtration prior to bottling.

Food Recommendation

Shepherd's pie with lamb, beef brisket with a smokey marinade, peppery lamb stew. Suspect it would be a great match with a decent burger!

Press

  • All you have to do with d'Arry's Original is to wait for a 'good' vintage and then grab a bottle. This 'fiddy-fiddy' Shiraz/Grenache blend harks back to a time when car windows required a winding motion to open them and tape decks were only for the wealthy. I adore this wine because it still represents the heart and soul of its namesake and his beloved region. Winemaker Chester Osborn stays true to his Cotes-du-McLaren Vale recipe and rustles us up a bargain-priced slice of his hillside to accompany hearty fare and great conversation.

  • This honours a great man of the Australian wine industry - d'Arry Osborn. This is a ripper from this very good vintage offering super value. Has a leafy red-fruit aroma with some really attractive spicy oak evident. Yet it's the fruit that carries it and distinguishes the style. A lovely wine for current drinking but one which can handle some extended cellaring.

  • A 50/50 blend of shiraz and Grenache from McLaren Vale, it's a tasty wine in the glass. Its aromatics remind of liquorice, sweet plum, blueberry,
cherry jam and fresh leather. The palate has soft tannins, medium length and gluggable fruit (I shall resist the spellchecker's insistence on gullible). Overall, this is a balanced wine, verging on delicious.
