Tasting Note

The purity and intensity of ‘cool’ cassis fruit cradled in creamy, delicately toasted oak brings to mind 'super second' growth Bordeaux. It’s an amazing thing that a mere 18% Cabernet Sauvignon makes its presence felt so distinctively, giving the wine an utterly different character to Amon-Ra. The balance is different too – deeper and leaner, with the tannin and acidity not quite so rounded out by the alcohol at this stage. That said, with an hour in the decanter it delivers loads of immediate pleasure - this is a great Anaperenna, and one of the most immediately enjoyable vintages. Drink 2017-35+

Purity, balance and intensity in epic proportions. Defies convention to have so much power in such an understated, delicate guise. Complexity appears other worldly with layers of exotic spice, dark black fruit and liquorice, punctuated with earthy bitter-chocolate. Decanting is a must, and will reward patience but willpower stands no chance!

Food Recommendation

This demands cuisine of equal class. A classic beef wellington cooked to perfection. Justice is done.

  • You can always rely on Ben Glaetzer to bring us epically proportioned wines but with the most finely-tuned tannins imaginable. In 2015 he does just this with two massive reds and yet they already
seem so conversational and relaxed. Anaperenna is sublime with the Cabernet breaking up the flow of Shiraz on the palate by puncturing the plummy fruit with blackcurrant depth charges. This wine also has some of the most exotic, Turkish spices on the nose I venture you will spend as much time sniffing as you will sipping it. 2015 Amon-Ra Shiraz is another wildly attractive wine in 2015. This time the message is Shiraz with Shiraz on the side accompanied by a Shiraz jus. It’s a good job that chef Ben is such a sensitive fellow because in anyone else’s hands this might be all too much!

  • 95/100 - No shrinking violet, this wine. But then no great brute either. It’s taut, tight, and rich, so very rich. One knows it’s naughty, but as is the case with all naughty excesses, willpower is fickle and weak and stands no chance.

    • The Key Report, August 2017
    • Tony Keys
  • 96/100 - 82% shiraz, 18% cabernet sauvignon from 30-100yo vines from Ebenezer, open-fermented, plunged, matured for 16 months in new French (92%) and American (8%) hogsheads. A very good example of full-bodied Barossa Valley shiraz, the cabernet simply riding shotgun; the palate has exceptional depth to its layers of black fruits, licorice, earth, oak and tannins, but emerges with perfect balance.
