Tasting Note

This could easily be Premier Cru Volnay: transparent red appearance and a very Burgundian nose of frosted rosehips, mushrooms and leather. In the mouth, gently perfumed fruit with complex truffle, tobacco and black tea flavours starting to emerge.

Crisp acidity and just a nip of tannin mean this benefits from decanting if drunk now, or may be enjoyed over at least the next 5-10 years.

Press

  • 96/100 - One of the finest releases under this label, with a deep, heady, rose petal perfume of intense red and black berries and cherries, cinnamon and nutmeg, that soaks up its fresh, tightly knit oak. Medium in weight, it’s juicy and mouthfilling, with a supremely elegant and harmonious presence of translucently pure cherry/berry fruit, fresh cedar/vanilla oak and fine-grained tannins, finishing with a lingering core of flavour, nuances of smoked bacon and a delightful acidity.

  • 17.5+/20 - Ripe, boiled red fruit that pushes the ripeness of Pinot to its limit, yet retains elegance and structure. This has the glossy, full style that reminds me a bit of Clos des Lambrays. Similarly complex too, though still terribly young. Drink 2019-2029.

  • 94/100 - Sturdy and dark-fruited as is Kooyong’s stamp, Haven is a plume of bing cherry, blueberry, black plum and cinnamon flavours, given energy by bright acidity and silken tannins following. This is pinot’s domain, in a riper sense. Vanillan, cedar oak frames and creams the wine’s edges, nestling in nicely to be absorbed, surely, into the generous melee in time. To: 2025
