Tasting Note

This is not soft, squashy strawberry Starburst Grenache.  This is real Grenache.  Serious Grenache.  Grenache with an attitude.

It has the most phenomenally complex aroma of wild berries, pepper, mushroom, gravel and iron. Depth, intensity and generous structure. Wild strawberries and peppery spice dance amid earthy undertones and brooding tannins. Decant to really show its true potential, then savour it slowly.  Drink now or over the next ten years.  Superb!

Winemaking

Walking the vineyard rows and tasting grapes, Chester Osborn classifies and determines the ideal picking time for each
individual vineyard.
Small batches are crushed in the Demoisy open-mouthed, rubber toothed crusher and then transferred to five-tonne headed-down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final
blending.
Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. When tannin extraction is just right the wine is
basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and old French and old American oak barriques to complete primary and secondary fermentation. The barrel fermented component is aged on lees to keep the wine fresh while also reducing the oak influence. There is no racking until final blending. Chester and the winemaking team undertake an extensive barrel tasting process to determine the final blend.

Press

  • Chester also makes a fruit-packed gem from another Rhone grape variety, the hard-working Grenache, in the form of D’Arenberg The Derelict Vineyards Grenache 2011. This is an ode to the magic of the frequently undervalued Grenache grape, grown on gnarled old vines, in several overgrown and derelict vineyards that Chester purchased last decade. ‘The vines should have died’ he told me ‘but Grenache is tenacious, and held firm.’ This wine is exuberant, yet serious, joyously fruity, yet with great complexity. A riot of rich, intense red berry and violet flavours are backed up with a brooding, spice and smoky depth. This is Grenache with style, and will last for years. If you can’t wait, serve it with chargrilled lamb cutlets, rich venison, or slow roasted spiced lamb.

  • Decades ago, when Grenache was unpopular, d’Arenberg held firm with its belief that it was a worthy grape. It is, and d’Arenberg is the modern pioneer of the grape. It’s floral and perfumed, with aromas of red berries – raspberry and blackberry – plus Redskins lollies. Gentle in the mouth, with density and interest, it’s fresh and vibrant rather than heavy and thick. I suspect it’s going to
age really well. Food match - Grilled lamb chops.

  • There’s some juicy red berry fruit here; imagine redcurrants and cherries. Surrounding the fruit though are layers of savoury earthiness – tar, leather and spice flavours come to mind. The tannins are firm and grippy with a stone - like tang, the perfect foil to the ripe flavours of the fruit. It’s the sort of wine that makes me think of putting something on the barbecue and drinking it this weekend but I’m fairly sure there’s plenty of potential here for the Derelict Vineyard to mature for a decade or more in a good cellar.

Customer Reviews

  • Awesome depth - even better after decanting

Wine of real depth and structure. At first a little tough, but the fruit really shone after being in the decanter for an hour and the earthy characteristics provided excellent complexity. Highly recommended.
