Tasting Note

This tastes like hedgerow fruit on a bright autumn morning (frosted rosehips and blackberries) and makes us think of quality red Burgundy. And yet you will never find a Burgundy at this price with such dry intensity surrounded by wonderful airy gracefulness. A terrific, complex Pinot Noir with a profoundness that suggests a far more expensive wine than it really is. Fantastic.

The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. The wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of geology and soils with the macroclimate of the region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within the vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice. Kooyong Massale is an estate blend of Pinot Noir parcels from the Tuerong and Balnarring vineyards. The parcels in this wine represent 12.9 hectares. The fruit was fermented, without yeast inoculation, in open vats for 18 to 21 days, with a small proportion of whole bunches included. The malolactic conversion is also indigenous. The maturation period is 13 months in French oak, 12% new.

  • The Mornington Peninsula in Victoria has become one of the world’s best places for making pinot noir. In pinot terms, this lucid, fluent example, with its fine, feathery feel and focused red berry fruit and lingering fresh finish, is excellent value, too.

  • 92+/100 - No hesitation on this one. It's exactly what you're looking for in a young, drink-ready pinot noir. Complex, juicy, forward but not at the expense of structure and form. It's spicy and autumnal but cherry-berry flavours keep it all moving swiftly along. Tannin is firm, dry and infused with woodsmoke. Indeed, there's a real woodsy feel to this wine, in a good way. It feels fine and lacy too. So many positives.

  • 93/100 - Even when tasted blind, Glen Hayley’s wines under the Kooyong label have the ability to seriously stand out from the crowd. I have loved the 2015 Meres and Haven individual vineyard pinots recently – both of which retail for $76 – but you don’t have to spend anywhere near that amount to get a sense of the quality and attention to detail given to all wines in the range from this quality Mornington Peninsula producer. This is an entry level offering, young and enticing, that offers excellent value. It’s bright red and vibrant, medium-bodied and red-fruit-driven with mainly older oak very much in the background adding smoky nuances. Appealing acid on the finish, too. Perfect for drinking now.
