Tasting Note

The colour is brilliant and deep, the nose intense with aromas of brambly black fruit, espresso, spice and just a hint of capsicum. Robust and dense on the palate, super-velvety tannins, fine oak nuance and positively bouncing with blackcurrant fruit. A hugely impressive wine that benefits from the grapes being dried, hand-picked at harvest and grown at high altitude.

Inspired by the drying process used to make Amarone, you will not find an Amarone of this quality for anywhere near this price!

Aged in American oak barrels oak for 8 months.

Food Recommendation

Pairs well with grilled meat, pork loin, pastas with meat-based sauce and spicy food.

  • This looks much less blue than I would have expected for such a young wine. Quite mature! Very different from the other Carmenères in this range - much sweeter and more evolved. The back label reveals that the grapes from this single vineyard, at 550m, were partially dried on the vine and the wine aged in American oak. All is explained. It works! A very attractive, non-heavy whole, grown on limestone. Drink: 2015-2018.

  • Best wine to go with LAMB RUMP CHETTINAYAD - Matching wine with Indian dishes is never easy, but get it right, and it’s far better than drinking lager! It’s all about matching the intensity of the spices and the flavourings to the wine’s intensity . Vina Falernia Carmenère Reserva is just the ticket in this case. This is a southern Indian dish packed full of heat, and spice; with its tomato base, it needs a rich, spiced red, which will cope with the chilli, and curry leaf intensity. This Chilean star, from the far north of the country is a worthy match, parrying the boldness of the dish, and the natural sweetness of the lamb with its own, bright, sassy, voluptuously spiced-up character. Heady blackberry fruit, cinnamon spice, shavings of dark chocolate and a swagger of Latin American ‘come hither’. Look no further.

  • (Original review of 2012 vintage, but describes the current vintage accurately also.) Chilean Carmenère works best, for me at least, when growers allow it to express some of its natural herbal character without letting it take over. Just a seasoning of green, rather than a humid greenhouse-full of tomato plant, adds a certain freshness which reminds me of the light red wines made from cabernet franc in France’s Loire Valley. More serious examples can take on flavours of dark chocolate and soy sauce, as well as the classic super-ripe Chilean blackcurrant. But one of my favourite carmenères, from Viña Falernia in northern Chile’s Elqui Valley, takes its cue from northeastern Italy, using a portion of dried grapes in the manner of Amarone della Valpolicella to make a deep, rich, sensuous red full of chocolate, sweet spice and dried and fresh black fruit.

Customer Reviews

  • Really excellent wine and great value

I recently ordered a few carmeneres to give them a try on the Chile special offer deal. This was by the far the best wine of the group, has amazing length, very smooth and full flavours with tannins that work rather than overpower it. Am about to buy some more. Sadly the reserve Syrah with the same label is not nearly as good as this.

  • Rich, smooth, irresistibly drinkable. Extraordinary.

So rounded and mature does this extraordinary red wine taste that friends who taste it, if it is served from a decanter, cannot believe it is as 'young' as it is. This describes the 2013 vintage, so far the only one I know. I hope the forthcoming 2014 will be as good or, if possible, even better.
