Tasting Note

Beautiful deep, intense colour.  The nose reveals blackcurrant and blueberry aromas. Elegant and fresh on the palate, with soft tannins and great length. The style of the wine clearly displays its distinctive 'terroir'.

This beautiful fairytale château, surrounded by a moat, is one of the oldest in the region.  In 1152, its wine was served at the wedding of Eleanor of Acquitane to King Henry II, signifying the start of a special relationship between Bordeaux and England that has endured for more than 800 years.  In 1855, d'Issan was received recognition as a 'troisième cru classé' in the official classification of Bordeaux wines.  The estate was purchased by the Cruse family in 1945, and is today run by Emmanuel Cruse.

The vineyard covers 44 hectares and comprises approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.  The grand vin spends around 18 months in oak barriques, of which half are new.  The wine is quintessential Margaux, and represents outstanding value next to Châteaux Margaux and Palmer.

Product Information

  • 91+/100 - The 2014 D'Issan has a crisp, pure bouquet, quite tight and reticent like the 2014 Marquis d'Alesme Becker, eventually offering blackberry, soy and cedar scents, almost Saint Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of herbaceousness on the entry, but there is plenty of fruit behind it. I like the classic style of this d'Issan, the pepperiness of the Cabernet driving the structured and quite masculine (for Margaux) finish. This is beginning to show the class that I thought it would and it may merit a higher score in the future.

  • 90/100 - Lovely floral fruit, elegant freshness and natural depth – a true taste of Margaux from this historic château. Drinking Window 2018 - 2028

  • 17/20 - Mid crimson. Correct and well balanced. Spreads right across the palate. Really very impressive balance with lots of useful elements. Good drive and interest quotient. Complex and satisfying. Quite persistent. Really very impressive even if not a very long-term wine. Drink 2018-2030.
