Tasting Note

This is an amazing, immediately delicious yet complex white wine. It impresses straight away with distinctive aromas of ripe pineapple, passionfruit and a hint of toasted sesame. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, yet with fabulous freshness and zest. You still taste the passionfruit, and there's a delicious pink grapefruit character as well that comes through on the palate. This should evolve nicely for a few years, although it's so delicious now, it will be hard to resist drinking immediately.

From the First Growth Sauternes producer, Château Guiraud, this dry white can only be called 'Bordeaux blanc', since Sauternes has to be a sweet wine.  And yet it has the richness and complexity of a far more aristocratic wine than its humble rank suggests.

Winemaker

Château Guiraud got Organic Farming certification in early 2011 and has managed the vineyard using organic methods since 1996. Soils composition is 80% sandy gravels, 20% clay gravels. Subsoils: deep translucent sand, pure gravels crossed by red clay and limestone marls, fossilized oyster beds and red and white clay. Harvested by manual picking only, by baskets of about 6 kg each to keep the high aromatic quality level of the berries.

Winemaking

Small vineyard of 3 hectares only, with thirty year old vines. Manually harvested and then vinified by 80% in oak barrels that have been used for the Sauternes great growth; 20% in stainless steel tank. Fermentation lasts for about 3 weeks. MLF is dependant on the vintage. Ageing: average of 7 months in barrels, regularly stirring the lees.

Press

  • 17/20 - Complex, cedary, herbal nose. Then more savoury oak flavours on the palate. Tight, fresh and with lovely precision on the palate and excellent length.

    • Julia Harding MW
  • 91-92/100 - Pretty deepness and ripeness to this with honeydew, dried-melon and lemon character. Medium body. Bright finish.
