Tasting Note

This is the best Pinotage we have ever tasted. And that includes examples that cost considerably more than this.

Pinotage is a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, and this wine tastes exactly like that - it has the beautiful plum perfume of Pinot Noir, seasoned with the liquorice and star anise spice of Cinsault. It caresses the palate with Pinot's seductive silky softness, and just a little more roundness and body. A succulent wine with beautiful balance and no hard edges.

Martin Meinert explains that the funky 'burnt rubber' character associated with Pinotage is in fact the taste of oxidation during winemaking, to which this grape variety is susceptible. By taking meticulous care of his fruit from picking all the way through the winemaking process, Martin ensures that we get to experience its true - delicious - character. The Printer’s Ink name is a tribute to the Meinert family’s heritage as master printers in Namibia.

The vineyard is untrellised, leading to a low yield of 5tons/ha and early ripening. It was planted in 1997 and is on a high cool slope in Devon Valley, on deep rich Hutton soils. The vines received no supplementary irrigation. Cold maceration of 10 days at under 10ºC followed by a short hot fermentation (3 days) before pressing. Thereafter the wine is taken to barrel immediately where it finishes MLF. Bottled after about 20 months in 225L 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels.

  • 92/100 - Hints of lavender on the fruity nose, the palate is rich and complex structured succulent dark fruit and smoke, with a touch of coffee.

Customer Reviews

  • In a different league!

Typically, I wouldn't show much interest in Pinotage. But forget your burning rubber, this is in a different league! A real depth of berry fruit accompanied by floral notes, it has weight and intensity but isn't overpowering. With a good hit of tannin, this would be a cracking partner to a slab of beef on the brai!
