Another small batch from the Fechner Bros' revered Eden Valley vineyard! Funkelpunkt {sparkling point} combines their mineral Riesling with textural Kerner (A.K.A. Weißer Herold) - topped up with a little splash of their super-aromatic Gewürztraminer. Three Germanic luminaries in aromatic kinesis. It's dry (brut), crisp and refreshing.

Vineyard: From the revered Fechner bros. vineyard in the Northern Eden Valley (the higher altitude sub-region of the Barossa). The three varieties are harvested optimally so that the Rieslings natural acidity drive is complemented by Kerner's texture and Gewürztraminer's heady aromatics. The Fechner bros. have the only Kerner vineyard in Australia after they encountered the Riesling cross-breed during a visit to Germany in 2003. The vineyard is adjacent to a Limestone quarry. These vines are all growing through a layer of clay into Limestone bedrock, which underpins the aromatic impact of the germanic white varieties. A prevailing breeze here keeps the vineyard dry, which allows for a light-handed approach to weed/disease control. Vineyard GPS: 34° 28' 39" S 139° 4' 11" E

Vinification: The two major components (Riesling 76.3% & Kerner 20.6%) are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed in order to minimise phenolic impact. The Gewürztraminer, however, is machine harvested and given about 24 hours skin contact in order to accentuate varietal aromatic impact. Primary fermentation occurs in a temperature controlled inox fermenter using a combination of indiginous and selected yeasts to develop and protect delicate aromas. Both primary and secondary fermentation (charmat method) were undertaken in delicate temperature controlled inox fermenters without the use of sulfur or other additions. Finally, a modest (5.4g/L) dosage was added for texture and body. Bottled unfined and with minimal sulphur addition.

Food Recommendation

Great to drink on its own at a party or as an aperitif but would equally work well it a gastronomic pairing. This would work beautifully with pan-seared scallops.
