Tasting Note

"Never before have I tasted a young Amon-Ra with such focus, freshness and finesse, coupled to such formidable power and concentration. It is reminsicent of First Growth Bordeaux sampled from the barrel, despite the obvious differences in place, grapes and winemaking - a wine that impresses every bit as much by its sophistication as by its intensity.

"Inky purple-black appearance.  Amazingly expressive, spicy black fruit aromas; juniper, espresso, creamy black cherry liqueur and the tiniest hint of eucalyptus.  It puts on a spectacular display of flavour, the first sip exploding in the mouth and then enveloping the senses with its breadth, depth and length on the palate.  It has quite firm tannic structure, and is not yet ready to drink, but even at this early stage it possesses superb balance.  What amazing vibrancy and energy, fine balance and finesse.  More than phenomenal - the best so far?  Put me down for some!  Drink 2020-2035+"

100% dry grown shiraz from Barossa Valley (Ebenezer sub-region). Age of vines: 50-120 years old. Vineyard yield: 1/2 T/acre (1.2 Tonnes per hectare)
Vinification: fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters, hand plunged 3 times daily. A small percentage completed primary fermentation in oak. Matured on lees to maintain fruit profile and animation. Minimal SO2. Topped up every 3 weeks. Oak: 20% American and 80% French (90% hogsheads, 10% barriques). Age of barrels: 100% new oak. Time in barrel: 15 months, then bottled unfiltered.

  • 19/20 - This is a wine of outstanding refinement. Ben readily admits that the early vintages of Amon-Ra were supposed to shock international wine commentators with their scale and impact. They certainly achieved their aim, but Ben knew that Amon-Ra really needed ratcheting back and this vintage shows the results of his gradual finessing and adding of detail. Cooler and longer with beautiful balance, this is a wine which will be sure to impress all-comers as opposed to just lovers of massive Barossan reds. Using 95% new French and 5% new American oak hogsheads this wine has swallowed this carpentry whole and it shimmers with refinement in the glass. It justifiably gains my highest ever score for this label.

  • 96/100 - Dramatic, intense and powerful, the 2016 Amon Ra Shiraz recalls the 2004 in its youth, crammed with layers of fruit, complex, savory elements and rich, velvety tannins. It's full-bodied, characterized by notes of grilled meat, espresso, black olive, cassis, vanilla, baking spices and an undercurrent of loamy earth. Yes, it's unapologetically big and bold, the product of a warm, sunny climate and ripe grapes, but it does show a sense of decorum, restraint and elegance on the long finish.

Customer Reviews

  • Still going strong at 13 years old

I get to taste lots of young vintages of this wine, but last night I opened a bottle of the 2006 from my collection for a colleague's leaving do. He brought a bottle of 2005. Both are fabulous - the 2005 is open and fully ready although will still be great for several more years. 2006 is more restrained and sophisticated, taking its time to reveal beautiful fruit purity and fine star anise spiciness. Absolutely delicious now, however it hints that the best is still to come.
