Shiraz/ Syrah

Shiraz was made famous by some of the fantastic wines coming out of Australia, what many don’t know is that it is made from the very same grape as France’s Syrah from the Rhône Valley.  In Australia, Shiraz is the most planted grape variety and can produce wines with depth and intensity.  Different flavours can be tasted from different regions with the Barossa valley in Australia producing Shiraz with hints of chocolate whilst Shirazes from cooler regions show flavours of black pepper.  . The best Shirazes can age for up to 10 years or more.

Generally speaking, Australian Shiraz can reach quite high alcohol levels and can also taste slightly sweeter, richer, riper and more full bodied than a Syrah from France.  After 5-10 years, a Shiraz matures to a smooth, velvety wine with fruity, berry characteristics.  French Syrah on the other hand, grown largely in Northern Rhône, has a trademark flavour of black pepper.  In the Southern Rhône Syrah is quite commonly blended with Grenache and Mouvèdre to produce popular and impressive wines such as Châteauneuf du Pape.

    The 2014 Bellerophon is classically structured with an intensely fragrant nose of violets, raspberries and white pepper.
