Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc grape produces crisp and dry wines with distinguishable flavours, creating a taste and smell that is quite familiar to most drinkers.  The similarities found across many a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, regardless of where the grape is planted is what makes this an exceedingly popular choice, and a fantastic starting point for understanding different grape varieties.  Better enjoyed as a ‘young’ wine, most Sauvignons are fermented in stainless steel, not oak, in an attempt to hold onto this fresh & fruity element.

The two more widely acknowledged areas for producing Sauvignon Blanc are France; Bordeaux and the Loire Valley, and New Zealand, especially the region of Marlborough.  The popular Sauvignon regions within France are the likes of the Loire, notably Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, and Bordeaux where you can often find a blend of Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon, another prominent grape in the South West of France.

With bold and intense fruity flavours coming from Marlborough, New Zealand has rapidly become famous for its trademark style of Sauvignon.  With noticeably tropical flavours, this widely appreciated style of Sauvignon Blanc is now being replicated quite successfully elsewhere by other, up and coming New World areas, such as Chile and South Africa, with their own twists on the style.
