Viognier

Viognier

Viognier, fashionable variety whose home is Condrieu in the Northern Rhône but which has been planted all over southern France, in California, in Australia and wherever a cosmopolitan wine producer lurks. The vine can yield poorly in cooler climates. Its full-bodied wines have a very distinctive scent of dried apricots and, almost, musk which develops only quite late in the ripening process. The wine is usually best drunk young. Because of the strength of its aroma, it can withstand blending well.

  1. Bogle Viognier Clarksburg California

GOLD MEDAL - 'Vibrant', 'opulent', 'pretty' – just some of the descriptors that illustrate how Bogle Winery won not just Gold but a Critics' Choice to boot. ‘Light, fresh minerality showing floral notes and some white peach on the nose,’ began an impressed Charles Pashby-Taylor of Dabbous, continuing: ‘Palate moves from magnolia through to apricot, quince and just a hint of banana, with a good mineral backbone.’ Match with dishes where herbs play a key role, such as roast chicken with tarragon.' 5. Bellerophon Syrah Viognier, Man O War

The 2014 Bellerophon is classically structured with an intensely fragrant nose of violets, raspberries and white pepper. Careful management of the stem and Viognier components has resulted in a palate that is soft and elegant exhibiting flavours of ripe red berries All of which is encased by the distinctive stem tannins giving a lifted freshness and length to the finish. The wine is incredibly approachable in its youth but will age gracefully developing more savoury earthy and smoked meat characters with time.

  7. The Noble Mud Pie Viognier Arneis, d'Arenberg (37.5cl)

Superbly indulgent, wonderfully rich and complex. A nose strongly reminiscent of dried apricots is the very start of a vinous journey full of excesses. The palate is equally dominated by these exorbitant apricot notes but of equal importance are the complexing flavours of ginger bread, tinned pineapple, honey, cinnamon and cumquat. The weight of the wine is unrivalled but the whole package is neatly dragged back into check by the crisp acid backbone ensuring the bottle, once opened is unlikely to see out the evening.
