Tasting Note

This is a blend of classic Champagne varieties:  Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.  The wine has a beautiful, delicate pink colour with an abundance of red berry fruit aromas. Aged on the lees, it has amazing elegance and flavours of of strawberries, cream and the merest suggestion of toasted notes on the palate. It is refreshing and classy, with balanced, discreet acidity.

The red wine was made from a small parcel of exceptionally ripe Burgundy clone Pinot Noir. It was hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard before being processed by gravity and given a five-day cold maceration. Our red wine was then blended with the Blanc de Noir cuvée to give a classy fruit driven Sparkling Rosé.

Food Recommendation

Oysters and crab, fish and chips, smoked salmon, spicy dishes, berries and citrus desserts or simply on its own as the perfect aperitif.

  • As we’re midway way through English Wine Week, we thought we’d share another stunning homegrown sparkler that has wowed the judges in our annual blind-tasting competitions. This one actually picked up a Master in our Global Rosé Masters last year, rising above some seriously impressive wines in the rankings from Italy, Australia and France. It was one of just two wines that were awarded Masters in the last competition, the other hailing from Champagne Perrier-Jouët. When we asked the judges about the standard of UK wines last year, they were all impressed. “A couple of the English sparkling wines we tasted were stunning, perfectly poised wines,” said Patricia Stefanowicz MW, while fellow judge and sommelier Andrea Briccarello described the entries from England as the “stars of the show”. Hattingley Valley’s rosé was singled out for its delicate aromas of apple, red berries, rhubarb and toast, along with its appealing creamy-textured palate. One judge enjoyed the fact that the pale pink fizz even seemed to carry some blackberry, alongside some zesty citrus and redcurrant fruit flavours, with a mouth-filling, fine mousse to boot. The wine had “lovely definition” according to Stefanowicz, with a pleasing persistence. The last word on her tasting sheet simply said “yum!”, which tells you all you need to know.

  • 92/100 - The 2014 Rosé is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir Pécoce. Now this is a very impressive sparkling Rosé. It has a succinct bouquet of freshly picked strawberry, red cherry and a touch of green apple, all precise and quite mineral-driven. The palate is fresh on the entry with a slight waxiness to the texture. It has more complexity than its peers and it fans out gloriously with hints of praline and strawberry towards the vivacious finish. This is one to serve to the next person that refutes the idea of great English sparkling wine.

  • Smells like toast with strawberries. Greengage plums and a bit dusty and pomegranates. Well-defined, expressive fruit on these Hattingley wines. Lift and bit of a heel-kicking attitude. I like the breadiness/toast here. Reassuring competence, although not quite a magical as their Reserve. 60% Pinot Noir, 38% Pinot Meunier, 2% Pinot Précoce. 7% barrel fermented. Drink 2018 - 2021.
