Tasting Note

Luscious aroma of cherries and rosehips, tinged with exotic lilies and alluring spice. Slight anise/leather character. Silky-soft, light texture yet complete and absolutely the way it should be. With bright acidity and very gentle tannin, this possesses the ethereal combination of lightness and freshness with substantial intensity of flavour. Delicious.

The vineyard name originates from the surrounding water bodies. Its greater exposure to the north, west and east limits the vigour of the vines, while the sandier soil reduces water stress compared to Ferrous and Haven. These factors combine to make the wine silken, perfumed and approachable when young, as well as having flavour concentration and ageing potential.

Winemaking

100% destemmed and fermented in open vats without innoculation.Matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new) Kooyong is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong and focuses on producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wine; which are both suited to the Peninsula's cool maritime climate. Kooyong is a 'domain' in the true sense of the word and the wines are made from 100% estate grown fruit at its own on-site winery.

Press

  • 94/100 - The most savoury example from the trio, the Meres offers red and black cherry, cold tea, Asian spices, roasted cashew and an intriguing sappy complexity; the palate is dominated by the charry oak at this early stage, yet the signs for a bright future come forward in the form of fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and lingering spicy, red fruit note on the finish.

  • 94/100 - Light to medium red/brick-red colour. Complex bouquet, spicy and high-toned, almost ethereal. The palate is intense and very refined, fresh and delicate yet with depth and a wonderful array of
flavours and aromas. Very strong, satisfying and finessed. Lovely now.

  • 2011 was the most challenging vintage in the last ten years in Mornington, not least because of the unwelcome thunderstorms which played havoc with Pinot bunches. Only a handful of wineries made truly awesome wines and Sandro Mosele at Kooyong showed us all why his wines are so rare and sought after because he not only nailed the wines, he also gave us aromas and flavours which enchant the senses. With delicate wild cherry nuances and refreshing, tangy acidity this is a beautiful creation worth treasuring.
