Tasting Note

Pinot Noir Las Brisas Vineyard has a clean and direct fruity nose with red cherries, hints of raspberries and a subtle wild herb note. Delicate and refined on the palate. Juicy with ripe flavours of berries combined with mineral notes and a lively acidity.

Winemaking

Las Brisas vineyard is planted in a southwest orientated slope in Leyda Estate. Because of this exposure, sunlight is slightly less in this block and the influence of ocean breezes is higher. Then, the ripening process occurs at a slower pace contributing to the development of different and special flavours and aromas. The production in this block is 5 tons per hectare. The winemaking of this block tries to be very respectful with the freshness of flavours from the grapes. Then, the extraction and maceration of skins is gentle and soft. After fermentation the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 8 months. New oak is not used in this wine in order to keep the fruitiness and brightness of aromas and flavours.

Press

  • Tony Denis of Mosimann’s enjoyed its ‘elegant nose, fruity and flinty notes with sweet strawberry and raspberry, followed by good juicy character and lovely spices on the palate, bringing a touch of warmth and enhancing the fruit flavours across the long palate’. ‘Lovely style, great elegance and length,’ added team leader Angela Reddin.

  • The 2015 Single Vineyard Las Brisas Pinot Noir is produced with grapes from a south-facing (cooler) vineyard with influence from the sea breeze ("brisa" is breeze in Spanish). The difference compared to the 2014 is that they have now selected the pure granite soils from four different plots rich in iron, quite red colored. It's an elegant Pinot from the last vineyard to be harvested among the variety. It's quite floral and with red fruit, with the austerity of the granite soils and with the spiciness provided by the use of 10% full clusters during the fermentation. The élevage lasted ten months and was in untoasted foudres for 30% of the volume, with another 30% in used French barriques, and the rest was kept in stainless steel. It's vibrant and juicy, with some orange peel aromas. They also managed to lower the alcohol to 13.5%, which they believe is compensated by the structure provided by the stems. Quite pure and straight. Scored 89/100

  • Supple, ripe and rounded red from the cool (in both senses) Leyda Valley. Juicy blackcurrant and plum are the top notes; slightly spicy, hazelnutty notes lie beneath. Heaven!

Customer Reviews

  • Very interesting wine at the price - well worth a try.

The nose gives off fresh but reasonably rich cherry fruit tinged with only just ripened berries and suffused with mediterranean herbs. The fruit is definitely sweet in the mouth, but the lively herbiness and well-proportioned tannins (nothing too strident) balance this and it doesn't do a 'bubblegum' on you. There are some distinctly French 'dirty' carnal notes lurking there as well which make this a very interesting wine for £12. I would serve it with Saltimbocca (which we make with pork tenderloin rather than veal). It was good with unsalted gammon too - but it does have a lot of alcohol, some would say too much, I guess.
