France
Yves Cuilleron originally trained as an engineer, and this shows in his wines: they are crafted with the utmost precision. There is no old-school Rhône ‘funk’ about them – their exquisitely pure, defined fruit and delicacy allied to intensity mean that they express a sense of place in an utterly refined manner.
Most of Yves’s vineyards are in Chavanay, just south of Condrieu and at the northern end of the very long Saint Joseph appellation. Here, Saint Joseph expresses the perfume of Côte Rôtie, rather than the denser, black-fruited style that you find near Cornas, to the south. Since establishing his estate in 1987, Yves has expanded it to a total of 59 hectares Condrieu, Côte Rôtie, Saint Joseph and other appellations. His ten hectares of vines in Condrieu accounts for around 5% of the appellation’s total. .
