E. Pira


Chiara Boschis convinced her parents to buy this estate after the legendary Gigi Pira died in 1980, and she took over entirely in 1990.  Under her determination and hard work its reputation has soared, thanks to her willingness to sacrifice volume in pursuit of quality.  Since the beginning she has practiced organic viticulture, although her first vintage to be certified organic was 2014. Initially one of the ‘modernists’ using new small French oak barriques, Chiara sought to gradually reduce the percentage of new oak:  by 2008, it was ⅓ first fill, ⅓ second fill and ⅓ third fill.  After her brother, Giorgio, joined the business he pursuaded her to also utilise some traditional, large botti, to allow the wines to express vineyard differences more clearly.
